General Insurance Article - Confused.com launches ‘thumb insurance'

 Thumb insuranceoffers policy holders protection for their thumbs in the event they become strained, damaged, cut or broken and is being specifically targeted at consumers who rely heavily on use of their thumbs for managing their work and social lives.

 Confused.com expects the insurance to appeal predominantly to those who use ipads and iphones, touch-screen technology and games consoles for several hours per day, and who would be unable to function should their first digit be rendered unusable.

 Commenting on the launch, Naill Fingerson, head of digits at Confused.com, said: "We're delighted to be the first company on the market to offer thumb insurance and believe that with the rise in popularity of social media it will appeal to those who use their thumbs heavily both for social and business purposes.  We're delighted to be able to offer our customers this product exclusively through the Confused.com site.

 Hannah from Cardiff, who recently suffered a painful papercut to the thumb said "My papercut caused me severe anxiety, I found myself unable to confirm the venue for a get together with my friends on Facebook. Stress levels doubled at work because I was unable to deal with my usual workload due to my painful finger and then I got lemon juice in the cut when I was making pancakes for tea, it really stung."

 Mike from London has also suffered a thumb injury: "I recently cut my thumb with a bread knife. It was quite a severe cut requiring bandaging and a thumb support. I couldn't fasten my shirt buttons or cufflinks properly which made me late for work and left me feeling really stressed."

 Thumb insurance policies are priced based on age, daily thumb usage, type of usage (texting, gaming, touch-screen or multiple) and also takes into account previous conditions. Ambidextrous policyholders will be eligible for a discount.

 The policy offers:

  •   A free emergency thumb kit, including Savlon cream, fast healing plasters and a thumb protection cover for emergency use;
  •
  •   Pay out of up to £100 per day for injured thumbs;
  •
  •   Up to 6 sessions with a thumb massage specialist in the event of muscle strain or seizure;
  •
  •   Access to a personal media service for those whose thumbs require complete rest, where tweets, facebook updates and emails will be sent on behalf of the policyholder by a trained specialist to ensure social engagements are not missed;
  •
  •   A 24 hour counselling helpline in the event of thumb-soreness, which also offers support and training to family members of the policyholder;
  •
  •   Medical care for long term thumb injuries, including a thumb rehabilitation clinic.
