Lifestyle Article - Debate on the Chief Actuary Practising Certificate

March 7th 2017 saw Bolton Associates host their second Hot Topics’ event at Corney and Barrow, Fenchurch Avenue. This was the second event in the bi-annual series, another opportunity for actuaries from all corners of the GI market to convene and discuss the pertinent issues affecting General Insurance and the actuarial profession.

“This was our second Hot Topics, and I’m pleased to say it was once again, a great success” says Constance Longden, organiser and Senior Consultant at Bolton Associates. “We welcomed some returning attendees from last years’ event as well as some new faces. The subject we covered this time around is something that affects both senior and junior actuaries across the whole market, so it was a great one to get our teeth stuck in to.”

The subject Constance is referring to is that of the Chief Actuary Practising Certificate. The ever evolving criteria, questions about the application process and the conversation around team structure and succession planning all make it ideal fodder for a Hot Topics debate

Once again, Bolton Associates’ strong market relationships brought together an expert panel of actuaries to give different perspectives on the subject. Speakers from the PRA included Chief Actuary James Orr and Geraldine Finucane, who specialises in dealing with SIMF. Jerome Kirk of PWC, Parth Patel of Ascot Underwriting and Nick Line of Markel joined proceedings to give insight from the Practising Certificate Committee.

"This is a subject that affects all actuaries, from graduates plotting their career paths to Chief Actuaries planning their succession.” says Nick Line “I'm not convinced people have given it enough thought. Developing actuaries who qualify for a Chief Actuary Practising Certificate is not straightforward and is definitely a Hot Topic.”

The informative, myth busting talks from these industry experts were topped off by a question and answer session and some off-topic socialising.

Attendee Cian Creedon, Capital Manager at Hiscox reflected on the evening saying "The event first caught my interest when I noticed the calibre of the speakers that Bolton Associate had managed to line up. I also figured it would be quite handy for CPD. The talk itself was very informative and full of useful practical information on the practicing certificate and SIMF. The speakers were concise and frank and I was genuinely surprised at how engaging and relevant the evening was. Definitely ranks among the top talks I've attended over the last year"

Glowing reviews and a growing delegate list mean Hot Topics will definitely be back for a third time in Autumn 2017, with subject matter likely to be influenced by October’s GIRO conference.

If you would be interested in speaking or attending the next Bolton Associates ‘Hot Topics’ evening, or for more information on future events, please email Constance Longden at constance@bolton-associates.co.uk
