Pensions - Articles - Aviva supports 'Golden Rules' approach from NEST

Paul Goodwin, Aviva's director of workplace savings says, "We cannot underestimate the challenge of getting millions of people saving for their retirement later this year.
Communication and engagement with employees is going to be key to get them actively saving towards their retirement and remaining opted in to the new automatic enrolment scheme.

"We fully support and welcome the positive and practical approach being taken by NEST (Golden Rules for Communications). Our own Working Lives research recently showed that 68% of employees had little or no knowledge of automatic enrolment, but wanted instant access to information about their pension or workplace benefits. A significant number of employers said that they leave it to the pension provider/trustee to communicate with their staff about pensions and 30% said that they tend not to communicate with people about pensions at all.

It's clear that employees want access to clear and concise information - through their employer, the industry, and through their own personal research. Importantly, our research also showed that employees thought they would be most likely to save more for retirement if they were shown what they ‘personally' need to put aside for the future. As well as information and communications, we see strong engagement as also including comprehensive planning tools which enable employees to personalise the information for their situation.

"It's imperative that we do all we can to help, but it's equally important that we focus on communicating the right type of information and provide access to useful planning tools. The key will be creating relevant and compelling communication and engagement practices."
