Investment - Articles - CGT receipts remain elevated following record annual total

HMRC’s latest Capital Gains Tax (CGT) data shows receipts of £198 million for August 2026, compared to the £190 million recorded in August 2025. This follows receipts of £194 million in July 2026.

Year-to-date CGT receipts for the 2026/2027 financial year now stand at £914 million, compared with £922 million at the same point last year. The figures come after a record year for CGT receipts, which reached £22.2 billion in 2025/26, significantly surpassing the previous record of £16.9 billion in 2022/23 and the £13.7 billion recorded in 2024/25. The latest Office for Budget Responsibility forecast expects CGT receipts to rise to £34.9 billion by 2030/31, up from £29.8 billion in its November 2025 forecast, largely driven by rising forecast equity prices.

Simon Martin, Head of UK Technical Services at Utmost, commented: "CGT receipts remain elevated following a record year for the Treasury, with higher rates introduced at the Autumn Budget 2024 and ongoing fiscal drag bringing more taxpayers into the CGT net.

"The OBR expects CGT receipts to play an even bigger role in Treasury revenues over the coming years, and with speculation already mounting around further CGT changes ahead of next month's Budget, uncertainty is becoming an additional consideration for investors and business owners. A growing tax burden on investment gains, property and business assets risks making the UK a less attractive destination for internationally mobile investors, entrepreneurs and business owners, especially when competing jurisdictions continue to offer more favourable tax regimes."
