General Insurance Article - Driving home for Christmas

Gordon Morris, Managing Director of Age UK Enterprises, said:

“With unsettled weather forecast until the end of the year and temperatures predicted to fall below freezing, people planning to drive long distances for Christmas should take the necessary precautions.

“It is essential that drivers ensure their vehicles are able to withstand the hazards of unpredictable winter weather. Planning ahead and taking the time to give your car a winter service will help you to stay safe. It is also essential that you have appropriate car insurance and breakdown cover in place should you encounter any motoring mishaps.”

Age UK Car Insurance offers these top tips to drive safe this winter:

♦ Check newspapers for the weather forecast for the region you will be travelling in. Alternatively, if you have access to a computer, go to www.metoffice.gov.uk
♦ Make sure that you have full visibility in your car and items, such as presents, do not obstruct your view
♦ If conditions are poor and causing concern, think carefully as to whether your journey is essential or whether public transport may be a safer option
♦ Get your battery checked before you set out on a long journey. A reputable garage can advise you on how to do this or could check the battery for you
♦ Check tyre tread and pressure - the legal standard is 1.6mm. However, better tread will result in better grip which will be beneficial in icy, snowy or wet conditions
♦ Clean your lights and check they are working properly - grime and dirt can prevent lights from giving full glow
♦ Ensure that you have a scraper and de-icer in the car at all times
♦ Never put boiling water on the windscreen – the dramatic difference in temperatures can cause the glass to crack
♦ Always carry a warm coat, blankets, gloves and snacks in the boot of your car and check that your mobile phone is fully charged
♦ Regularly check and top up your oil, water and antifreeze levels. If you’re not sure how to do it, have it checked by a garage.
