General Insurance Article - Portugal removed from the UKs travel red list

Tommy Lloyd, MD of Medical Travel Compared commented: The government’s announcement that Portugal has now been removed from the UK’s travel ‘red list’ is positive news for Brits hoping to get away for a summer holiday later this year, and is likely to boost consumer confidence as holiday firms and airlines report a surge in bookings.

With that said, it’s still important to remember that over the past year, COVID-19 has had a tremendous impact on how the world travels, with many finding their holiday plans derailed as they quite rightly focus on staying safe and healthy in these unprecedented times. With that in mind, the first piece of advice I would give to anyone booking a holiday is to purchase travel insurance immediately after booking to ensure they have appropriate protection against COVID-19.

When booking travel insurance, check that the policy covers Coronavirus related incidents. There are COVID-19 specific travel insurance products on our panel that will cover you should you contract COVID-19 either before or whilst on holiday, as well as provide cover should your holiday be cancelled.

Staycations are of course also still a popular holiday choice for 2021 but we have often noticed these trips to be underinsured even before COVID-19. We know travel insurance is not an obvious consideration when planning a break in the UK, but it is definitely worthwhile especially considering the current situation. Thanks to our amazing NHS you don’t need medical cover, however, a UK travel insurance policy can cover you for loss of belongings, personal accident and cancellation benefits. Travelling in the UK can still be subject to cancellation, for example, if you have to cancel plans yourself due to unforeseen circumstances. We know that the cost of a staycation can mount up to just as much as a holiday abroad – so it’s best to be prepared.
