Lifestyle Article - Standard Life appoint actuary Barry Butler to their IGC

Butler joins the Independent Governance Committee for Standard Life pension scheme members. Appointment follows Andrew Davies’ transition to Chair of the Committee

Standard Life, part of Phoenix Group, has appointed Barry Butler to its Independent Governance Committee (IGC), overseeing the interests of c.2.7 million workplace pension scheme members with total assets under administration of nearly £65 billion. Butler joins the IGC following Andrew Davies’ transition to Chair and reinforces the Committee’s dedication to strong governance and oversight.

In addition to his Standard Life responsibilities Butler, along with his colleagues on the IGC, will oversee assets of members worth c£7 billion within schemes managed by Phoenix Life Limited, ReAssure Life Limited, ReAssure Limited and Phoenix Life CA Limited (the company formerly known as SunLife of Canada).

Butler brings extensive financial services experience to the role, including board expertise given his role as a Non-Executive Director for MetLife. A qualified actuary, his broad expertise in financial management, risk oversight, and customer-focused governance will support the IGC’s role in ensuring pension scheme members within its remit receive transparency, value for money and a high-quality service.

Andrew Davies, Chair of the Standard Life Independent Governance Committee, said: “We’re delighted to have Barry on board – his vast swathe of leadership experience in our industry and track record in governance make him a fantastic addition to the IGC. His expertise will be invaluable as we continue our work to protect and enhance outcomes for Standard Life’s workplace pension customers.”

On joining the Standard Life IGC, Barry Butler, said: “I am delighted to join the Standard Life IGC at such a crucial time for workplace pension savers. With Consumer Duty changing the game, pension reform on the Government agenda and increasing focus on customer outcomes and value for money, I look forward to working with the Committee to ensure we continue to serve the best interests of customers.”

Barry Butler joins the IGC in February 2025.
