Pensions - Articles - Trustees must decide do I consolidate or go it alone?

Speaking at the Professional Pensions Trustee Senate earlier today, Nausicaa Delfas, Chief Executive of The Pensions Regulator, set out why, with a clear reform agenda ahead, now is the time for trustees to act and take the decisions that will deliver a sustainable income in retirement for millions.

Nausicaa's key points included:

For trustees running a defined benefit scheme, now is the time to make choices on endgame. With an estimated £170 billion of surplus assets, DB schemes are better funded than at any point in recent memory. The best time to make a decision is not when circumstances force your hand, but when options are available. That is why trustees should consider the full range of models which are now available in endgame to secure outcomes in the long term.

For defined contribution schemes, delivering value for members to and through retirement is the priority. Trustees should start preparing now – get data in order for the Value for Money framework, review the investment strategy and start preparing for default retirement plans.

For every scheme, effective and independent governance is essential. Many schemes do not have the sophisticated investment governance and risk management systems to capitalise on the full range of opportunities available.

So, all trustees should ask themselves a tough question: with all that is required of me now, should I consolidate or do I have the capability to go it alone?
