The launch comes as new M&G research¹ shows signs of growing engagement with retirement planning, but persistent confidence gaps. Among people with a pension, 43% now know how much they and their employer contribute, up from 36% a year ago, However, awareness varies between men and women, at 47% and 39% respectively.
Which pension personality are you?
The interactive quiz is part of M&G's Reframing Retirement campaign and assigns users one of four retirement personas based on their current behaviours and attitudes towards long-term financial planning.
The Planner: Looking ahead with confidence, already thinking practically about retirement goals and next steps;
The Pathfinder: Making progress but still working out the best route towards the future;
The Multi-Tasker: Balancing today’s competing financial pressures with tomorrow’s retirement needs;
The Starter: Beginning the journey and looking for a clear first step.
By reflecting the different ways people think about their financial future – from those already making plans to those juggling competing priorities – the quiz is designed to make retirement feel more relevant, practical and easier to act on.
To help turn awareness into action, M&G is calling on the government to introduce Pension Health Checks2 at key life stages, such as starting a new job, receiving a promotion or approaching retirement. These checks would help savers throughout their career understand whether they are on track and what steps they could take next.
Matthew Ings, Chartered Financial Planner at M&G, said: “Retirement planning doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some are Planners, already mapping out their future. Others are Pathfinders following a route, Multi-Taskers balancing today’s pressures with tomorrow’s goals, or Starters taking their first steps. The important thing is knowing where you stand and gaining confidence about what to do next.
“That’s why we believe Pension Health Checks should become routine. Just as millions visit their local GP surgery for a check-up, savers should have regular opportunities to assess whether their retirement plans are on track. Regular Pension Health Checks throughout working life could help millions build a better retirement.”
