General Insurance Article - Charlie Finch highlights a move from equities

Pension funds are likely to speed up their movement away from equities into less risky assets if a Solvency II-type regime is made applicable to pension funds, industry figures have warned.

LCP partner Charlie Finch said not only would pension funds have to hold assets equal to the best estimate of liabilities but also a risk margin on top of that, which increases with riskier assets.

He explained: "If investing in equities you will be penalised because you will have to hold more equities to cushion against volatility, whereas if you invest entirely in gilts or low risk cash assets you have to hold less assets overall."
