Lifestyle Article - De-stress with Zumba

Kiran Lyall explores the new fitness workout taking the nation by storm – Zumba!
When I first arrived at my Zumba class I was amazed by the 50 odd people queuing to get in. Surely they can’t all be staying I thought. Well they did, plus the late entries. So back of the class it was for me then. Up on stage my instructor Paula was kitted out in Zumba branded wear, bursting full of energy. ‘Anyone new to Zumba?’ she shouted scanning the room. Rather embarrassingly, only my hand shot to the air. She gave me a quick run down of what steps to expect before pressing play to begin the warm up.

The routines were a mix of meringue, salsa, bhangra, hip hop, reggateton plus much more. What really stood out from a normal gym session/fitness workout to Zumba was the stopping and starting after every routine – which initially I found very odd. Everyone would dash to the side to get a drink of water, while I played ‘lonesome me’ in the middle of the hall. Towards the end though it became apparent as to why, the incredible amount sweat you lose (serious rocky balboa situation) will make you gasp for water. It’s best to be start sipping as soon as.

What’s great about Zumba is you don’t need loads of inner rhythm for the routines as they all start of slow so it’s very easy to keep up. However, you do need coordination. When the whole room marched left and a few went right, a couple of disapproving looks were exchanged.

Overall I found Zumba to be a great stress buster. The aggressive dance steps and party feeling is very uplifting. At some points it reminded me of going to a pantomime but instead of the ‘Oh no it isn’t’ banter, it was xxxxx. I loved being able to dance along to loud music and like many in the class singing along too. One thing you just can’t do in the gym.

Some people say that the Zumba hype will be short lived but one thing for sure everyone should try a class and experience working out to a party atmosphere. The end result… feeling de-stressed, relaxed and fit!
