The 2025 to 2026 winter season was characterised by a succession of storms affecting different regions of Europe. |
While storms continued to impact Northern and Western Europe, several of the highest loss-causing events tracked more southerly, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall to Spain and Portugal. In contrast to many recent seasons, losses in the Iberian Peninsula represented a large share of total European insured losses, driven by both wind and rain. Commenting on the report, Sandra Hansen, Head of International Peril Advisory, Marsh Re, said: "The 2025–26 European winter storm season was notable for its severity in Southern Europe with intense wind and rain. Looking ahead, while storm frequency is expected to remain variable year-to-year, a warming climate will likely intensify flood risk. The growing threat of flash flooding warrants particular attention as a dimension of storm-related risk, with resilience key to mitigating impacts." |
