The Society of Pension Professionals respond to the government’s LGPS Access & Fairness consultation

The Society of Pension Professionals (SPP) has responded to the current Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government consultation on LGPS Access & Fairness.

The SPP has given strong support to the proposals, agreeing with the Government that these proposals will fundamentally improve fairness in and access to the LGPS.

However, the SPP have also highlighted the potential for “disruptive administrative impacts” given the numerous other projects being dealt with by the LGPS from dashboards to the McCloud remedy. The response goes on to state that these impacts could be mitigated with careful timing and sequencing of the necessary regulation changes.

The SPP is very supportive of measures to reduce gender pension gaps but has taken the opportunity to push for greater clarity on definitions. Likewise, it is supportive of proposals relating to the McCloud remedy but has highlighted that in relation to proposals for transfers from other public service schemes for members over 65 years old, success depends on the specific details of the mechanism and the associated guidance.

Tim Domanski, Deputy Chair of the SPP’s Public Sector Committee, said: “The SPP is naturally supportive of steps to improve fairness in and access to the LGPS and that comes through very clearly in our response to the current consultation. However, there remain areas that could be improved and the issue of administrative burden is certainly one that the Government needs to be alive to.”
