Investment - Articles - Mercer bolsters alternatives boutique

Mercer has hired infrastructure specialist Toby Buscombe as a Principal in its Alternatives Boutique. In his new role, Mr Buscombe will be responsible for delivering investment advisory services in infrastructure and private equity to clients. He will also represent Mercer in the wider debate on potential reforms to the infrastructure financing market both in the UK and across Europe.

Mr Buscombe has over a decade of experience in infrastructure investment and asset management on behalf of pension fund clients. He joins from Australian-headquartered consulting and asset management boutique Access Capital Advisers, where his latest role was as a Partner and Head of the European Infrastructure Group, running the firm’s London office. Before his 10 year tenure at Access Capital, Mr Buscombe was an Economist with the New Zealand Department of Labour.

Robert Howie, European Head of Mercer’s Alternatives Boutique, said: “We are very pleased to welcome Toby to the team. His considerable experience will be a great asset to our expanding alternatives capability and his appointment demonstrates our sustained commitment to helping investors implement investment programs to benefit from exposure to a broad range of asset classes.”

Mr Buscombe commented: “I am very excited to have joined Mercer - a world class organisation - and to have the opportunity to collaborate with such an experienced team in the delivery of investment advice to clients looking for an infrastructure exposure. The current investment landscape is an exciting one for long term investors such as pension funds, and these investors are likely to have a greater role to play in the provision of finance to new projects, an area where to be able to provide them with assistance and advice.”

Mr Buscombe’s appointment follows that of Karen Chester, another senior infrastructure practitioner and former Access Capital Advisers Partner, who joined Mercer’s Sydney office in early 2011.
