General Insurance Article - Most students in the dark about insurance

HALF of students don't understand the term 'contents insurance', a new survey has found. A poll of 1680 students conducted by UNIDAYS and insurance company Urban Jungle found that 51% of students replied 'no idea what that is' when asked the question:'Have you ever thought about getting contents insurance?'.

Less than a fifth (18%) replied they had it and a similar number (17%) felt they didn't need it.

Eight percent of students said they would get contents insurance although they hadn't got round to it.

While five percent had been informed by their parents saying 'Mum told me I needed to get it'.

Jimmy Williams, CEO of Urban Jungle says students should be aware that their most loved items will not be covered by their parents' insurance when they leave for university.

"Students often have some very valuable items such as laptops, tablets and bicycles, which could be very expensive to replace. They are moving to new areas, which might not be as secure as where they lived previously.

"Also, accidents do happen, drinks being spilled on computers and phones being dropped in toilets is very common.

"Everyone wants to have a happy and carefree first few months at university and the last thing you need is to be shelling out hundreds of pounds to replace essential items."

Jimmy founded Urban Jungle in 2016, which specialises in providing cover for Generation Rent and Millennials, after personally experiencing difficulty in getting insurance while in shared accommodation.

"It used to be very hard to cover my sports kit or clothes I'd bought for work," recalls Jimmy. "I also had one bad experience with car insurance. We absolutely believe young people should be able to access good cover, even if they are frequently moving address or living with others."

The research described in the article was an online poll conducted via the UNIDAYS website and carried out in July 2020.
