Pensions - Articles - Police pension petition reaches 100,000 signatures

Over 100,000 police officers have now signed an online petition calling on the government to halt its 'attack' on police pensions. As a result the issue could be selected for parliamentary debate.

Anger levels have been increasing among police officers across the UK after the government confirmed that from April 2015, existing police pension schemes would be replaced by career average schemes and police officers would have to pay a higher proportion of their income into their pension scheme.

The Police Federation of England and Wales vice chairman Simon Reed said: “The number of signatures this petition has gained paints a stark picture of the strength of feeling and anger felt by police officers across the UK.

“The Police Federation of England and Wales urges the government to take notice of this petition, to honour section 2 of the Police Pensions Act and to ensure that the voices of so many officers do not go unheard. Officers are facing unprecedented attacks on their pay and conditions and there is much anger that the office of constable seems under relentless attack from this government.”
