Pensions - Articles - PwC appoints Stephen Soper as senior pensions adviser

PwC has appointed Stephen Soper as senior pensions adviser. Stephen will join PwC’s pensions credit advisory team in September. He joins from The Pensions Regulator, where he has held positions of executive director for defined benefit (DB) regulation, and interim CEO. Under Stephen’s leadership, the regulator achieved landmark case outcomes, including the £184m settlement for the Lehman Brothers Pension Scheme, and oversaw the initial roll-out of auto-enrolment.

In his new role, Stephen will lead PwC’s work with companies and trustees to help them find solutions for their pension obligations which support sustainable growth, while at the same time protecting the interests of the pension scheme.

Jonathon Land, head of PwC’s pensions credit advisory business, said:
“Our Pensions Support Index shows that legacy defined benefit pension obligations continue to be a drag on companies sponsoring those schemes and in some cases are compromising their ability to invest and prosper.

“We believe there are opportunities for employers and investors to deploy new solutions which allow for the sustainable growth of employers, while at the same time meeting the commercial and regulatory hurdles of pension scheme trustees. Stephen’s wealth of experience and track record in achieving win-win solutions for shareholders, companies and pension scheme members will be a huge asset to our expanding team.

“We look forward to working with him and our clients to bring new and creative solutions to help tackle companies’ legacy defined benefit pension issues.”

 Stephen Soper, said:
“Companies and Trustees have a great opportunity right now to fundamentally reshape the way retirement provision operates, for the benefit of all concerned.
“It is very exciting to be joining PwC at the forefront of these new developments.”
