Pensions - Articles - Research reveals unique pension needs of LGBTQ+

New research from Barnett Waddingham sheds light on how LGBTQ+ individuals are approaching retirement - highlighting distinctive challenges and opportunities that demand more inclusive financial planning and engagement approaches

Key findings from The LGBTQ+ At Retirement Reckoning include:
 • LGBTQ+ individuals are more likely to be single and childfree, as they approach retirement
 • 73% of LGBTQ people would find a community focused on socialising set up by their pension provider helpful - showing a clear appetite for support that mitigates isolation.
 • The vast majority (93%) of LGBTQ+ individuals would seek advice for retirement - yet nearly 1 in 3 are unsure who to trust
 • Trans respondents show both high confidence (79%) in retirement income - often due to DB scheme access - and significant concern about longevity, with 38% not expecting to live past age 67.

Based on a nationally representative survey of 5,000+, of which 11% were lesbian, gay, bisexual, asexual, pansexueal or queer - the research polls working UK adults with retirement intentions, urging pension providers and policymakers to evolve how they support diverse retirements not just in message, but in meaningful action.
