General Insurance Article - Specialty products underwriting division launched by Liberty

Liberty Syndicate Management Limited (Liberty Syndicates), a part of Liberty Mutual Insurance Group, has announced that Peter Smith has joined to lead its new Specialty Products underwriting team.

Taking up his new role of Head of Specialty Products with immediate effect, Smith will report to Matthew Moore, Liberty Syndicates Chief Underwriting Officer. Following Smith’s appointment, Liberty Syndicates plans to put in place a dedicated team of respected market-leading underwriters. The planned team aims to establish itself as a credible lead market in London for Treaty Personal Accident and Treaty Political Risks, Credit and Crisis Management.

Commenting on the formation of the new division led by Smith, Matthew Moore said: “This represents a major new initiative for Liberty Syndicates, taking us into a segment of the market in which we believe we can make significant inroads. We know that these Specialty Products are an area in which brokers would like us to take an active role.”

“Peter’s well-deserved reputation for leading the market in specialty business combined with our brand, our high level of broker service and our disciplined approach should make for a very powerful offering. Our next step, which is already under way, is to build a team of strong, respected underwriters to support this endeavour.”

Trading from Liberty Syndicates’ office in Plantation Place South and operating from the Liberty Syndicates’ underwriting box at Lloyd’s, the division will ensure the Syndicate is well positioned to underwrite the full range of niche insurance and reinsurance product lines plus next generation emerging risks.

Liberty Syndicates says it plans to have the new team in place and operational by October 2012.
