Pensions - Articles - Transfer values mainly unchanged during January say Xafinity

Transfer values as measured by the Xafinity Transfer Value Index were largely unchanged in January 2017. The Xafinity Transfer Index on 31 January 2017 stood at £232,600 compared with £234,000 at 31 December 2016:

Over the course of January 2017 the Xafinity Transfer Value Index varied between a maximum of £235,000 and a minimum of £230,000 – a variation of around 2% in the month.

Paul Darlow, Head of Proposition Development, Xafinity comments: “Transfer values in January 2017 were fairly stable. We saw increases in Gilt yields largely matched by increases in inflation expectations. The two movements mostly cancelled each other out, leaving transfer values (at least for inflation-linked benefits) largely unchanged over the month. I wouldn’t want to second-guess the next move for transfer values – but it will be interesting to see how markets react to the triggering of Article 50 and a UK move away from Europe.”

The Xafinity Transfer Value Index tracks the transfer value that would be provided by an example DB scheme to a member aged 64 who is currently entitled to a pension of £10,000 each year starting at age 65 (increasing each year in line with inflation). Different schemes calculate transfer values in different ways. A given individual may therefore receive a transfer value from their scheme that is significantly different from that quoted by the Xafinity Transfer Value Index.
