Articles - Actuaries can shake off 'dull' image & be 'interesting'

Actuaries can shake off that ‘dull image’ and become really interesting according to recruitment consultancy GAAPS Actuarial. This is because they are extremely well positioned to highlight and proffer a number of interesting views, insights and trends across a wide range of subjects.

“Actuaries play important roles within many areas of today’s society, and on a global stage - areas such as social, financial, investment, management, education. Unfortunately, all too often this doesn’t get picked up and their involvement and contributions pass totally unacknowledged,” says Dr Geraldine Kaye, managing director of GAAPS Actuarial.

“In addition to probability and mortality stats for the insurance industry, which for the profession is well recognised, actuaries have a unique ability to interpret data on many diverse subjects and at different levels, for example genetics, socio-economic profiling, risk management and general business forecasting.

“Although actuaries are respected for their high educational and examination standards, all too often their expertise and experience gets hidden away behind the scenes and out of sight. In numerous instances, actuaries can have influence in public decision-making with legislators, regulators, civil servants and politicians - and then there’s the private sector.

“What needs to happen……recognition and good communication with wider audiences.”
