General Insurance Article - Friday 13th spells trouble when it comes to insurance claims

The last Friday 13th saw home and motor insurance claims increase by over a third* according to data from the Co-op Insurance.

Friday 13th is universally regarded as a very unlucky day. Claims data from the Co-op has shown that insurance claims received on Friday 13 November 2015 increased 34% from the number received on the previous Friday 13th in March 2015.

Folklore says that Friday 13th is unlucky for some with many people avoiding certain activities on this day, such as travel, due to the superstition attached to it. This Friday 13th is the only one in 2016.

According to the Co-op’s data, throughout the year motor claims** are most likely to happen on a Friday however this is when the roads are generally busier. In comparison, home claims are more evenly spread throughout the week.

Jonathan Guy, Head of Claims at the Co-op Insurance, said: “The last Friday 13th that we saw coincided with claims increasing by a third, in comparison to the previous Friday 13th.

“This is more than likely down to coincidence and weather conditions, however we are urging people to be more careful when in their homes and out on the roads this Friday, just in case.”
