There were an estimated 625,000 people aged 90 years or older in the UK in 2024; this is an increase of 53.7% since 2004, and an increase of 2.2% since mid-2023. Of the people aged 90 years and older, 84.5% were aged 95 years or younger.
Stephen Lowe, group communications director at Just Group, commented: “The UK’s centenarian population has doubled in the past 20 years and continued to rise in 2024 to a record 16,6000. Aside from keeping the King’s birthday messaging service busy, it demonstrates some of the significant demographic challenges the country faces.
“An ageing population will put pressure on the State as the cost of providing care and benefits like the State Pension continues to rise. Without significant changes to taxation or the care and benefits systems, it means that those working will likely need to shoulder more of the fiscal burden in the coming years.
“Even if we are young today, most of us hope to be fortunate enough to live a long life. Financial planning – either for an individual or as a couple – can help everyone gain a clear understanding of how their preparations for later life are shaping up, so they’re able to relax and enjoy a better later life when it comes.”
