We would like to thank you once again for joining us as we continue to celebrate and reward the talent and achievements of individuals in the actuarial arena. With 9 awards to be won, make your nominations here for your colleagues, employees and team. Celebrating Actuarial talent since 2012.
Bronwen Seaton-Wood, PIC Head of Talent: “We are delighted to continue our sponsorship of the Actuary of the Year Award, recognising the outstanding individuals whose expertise, innovation and dedication are helping to shape the future of the actuarial profession. At PIC, actuaries play a vital role across our business, from Investments and ALM to Finance, Risk and Capital Management. Their insights and technical expertise help us deliver our purpose: paying the pensions of our current and future policyholders.
The work actuaries do extends far beyond the numbers. By helping organisations make informed, long-term decisions, they contribute to financial security for millions of people. At PIC, this is reflected in our investment approach, where we deploy capital into long-term assets, including UK infrastructure and regeneration projects, supporting economic growth and creating lasting social value. We are committed to providing an environment where actuarial talent can thrive at every stage of its career, with opportunities to develop, collaborate and make a meaningful impact. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of this year’s nominees and congratulating the winner later in the year.”
Zoe Bolton, Managing Director at Bolton Associates: Bolton Associates is once again the proud sponsor of the General Insurance Actuary of the Year Award. Bolton Associates are delighted to be sponsoring the General Insurance Actuary of the Year award again. As a firm that lives and breathes the GI Actuarial market — placing everyone from Chief Actuaries and SMF20 holders through to rising stars in reserving, pricing and capital modelling — we’re proud to be the long-term sponsor of this award. It's a chance to celebrate the people doing brilliant, often under-the-radar work keeping this market financially sound. And honestly, it feels like the right moment to be shouting about great actuaries. A lot has been shifting in GI actuarial hiring lately, and a few things stand out to us:
Demand hasn't slowed down — but employers know exactly what they want. Actuarial skills are as sought-after as ever, with risk getting more complex, regulation tightening, and new challenges like climate change and AI reshaping what needs modelling. But it's not a case of "more bodies needed" — firms are hunting for sharper, more specialised skillsets, particularly around pricing and capital work. Being able to explain your work is as valuable as being able to do it. Technical excellence is a given at this point — what's setting candidates apart now is being able to translate complex modelling into something underwriters, boards and capital committees can actually act on. Commercial nous and adaptability are carrying real weight in hiring decisions.
AI is changing the job, not replacing it. Automation is taking over more of the grunt work, but that's raising the bar rather than shrinking headcount — junior actuaries are increasingly expected to be comfortable with new tools and data on top of the fundamentals. Celebrating the people getting it right, and making the profession visible to the next generation, matters more than ever. Do take the time to nominate your colleagues and mentors – this is a well-voted for award, and has a wide reach.
We look forward to seeing the nominations, and we will see you all in Edinburgh, at GIRO 2026.
Antony Buxton, Managing Director at Star Actuarial Futures: Star Actuarial Futures is delighted to continue its sponsorship of the Sustainability Actuary of the Year award. The last 12 months have been another eventful period for global sustainability. Approaches to sustainability and ESG have continued to evolve across different markets, reflecting varying regulatory priorities, political environments and economic pressures. Against this backdrop, momentum behind the energy transition and biodiversity protection has continued to build, while climate adaptation and resilience have become more prominent in international climate policy discussions.
For actuaries, sustainability continues to present both challenges and opportunities. Across insurance, pensions and investment, actuaries are helping organisations understand the financial implications of climate change, nature-related risks, evolving regulation and changing societal expectations. Whether through risk management, investment advice, capital modelling or long-term scenario analysis, actuarial skills are being applied to some of the most complex sustainability issues facing organisations today.
Planetary Solvency: Tipping into the wild unknown, published by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and Anglia Ruskin University, provided a notable example of actuarial thinking being applied to sustainability challenges. The report warned that biodiversity loss, climate shocks and geopolitical conflict are disrupting the food system, risking catastrophic impacts for the financial system and for society as a whole, and highlighted actions for policymakers, regulators and those working in the financial sector to integrate nature into decision making. To everyone working directly or indirectly in this field, thank you for your continued contribution. Your work is helping organisations navigate an increasingly uncertain environment while supporting more resilient and sustainable outcomes for society. Congratulations and best of luck to everyone who receives a nomination. We’re looking forward to seeing this year's shortlist!
Star Actuarial Futures is also delighted to introduce and sponsor the AI Actuary of the Year award.
The last 12 months have seen artificial intelligence move further into the business mainstream. Across financial services and beyond, organisations are exploring how AI can improve efficiency, generate new insights from increasingly complex data and support decision-making. At the same time, questions around transparency, accountability, model risk and the wider implications of AI have become more prominent as organisations consider how best to deploy this technology. Many of the challenges raised by AI are familiar territory for actuaries. Understanding underlying assumptions, exercising professional judgement and communicating uncertainty have long been central to actuarial practice. As organisations seek to harness the potential of AI, these skills are extremely relevant.
This new award is designed to recognise and celebrate actuaries working at the intersection of actuarial science and artificial intelligence. Whether you are using AI to enhance actuarial analysis and decision-making, developing innovative new applications, or helping organisations understand and manage the risks associated with AI, we are excited to hear your stories. We can't wait to meet the first nominees!

Actuary of the Year 2025- Michelle Lister, Aon
I screamed with excitement, I was so happy. I’d taken the day off for annual leave as my children had an inset day and we’d gone to the Christmas markets in Manchester along with my mum and dad. I checked my emails on the train home and shouted “I’m actuary of the year, woohoo”. The next sentence said that I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone the results until the magazine was published so I quickly swore everyone to secrecy and hoped there were no other actuaries on the train. I did later that day let my husband into the secret. I am so very grateful for this award. I was completely overwhelmed to have been nominated and I still cannot believe that i have won, it means so much to me.
