General Insurance Article - Transfer values fluctuated in April touching previous high

The Xafinity Transfer Value Index showed that during April 2017 transfer values fluctuated, touching the previous record high in the month before falling to £237,000 at the end of April 2017. This was an increase of just under 1% over the course of the month.

The variation over April 2017 was over 3.5% (or £9,000) and follows a relative period of calm for transfer values over the first quarter of the year.

Sankar Mahalingham, Director, Xafinity comments: “Transfer values in April 2017 were more volatile than in recent months, with changes in inflation expectations being the main driver. This is partly due to the triggering of Article 50 and the announcement of the general election; more fluctuation is likely over coming months. Transfer values remain high, and the trend for more members taking this option will no doubt continue.”

The Xafinity Transfer Value Index tracks the transfer value that would be provided by an example DB scheme to a member aged 64 who is currently entitled to a pension of £10,000 each year starting at age 65 (increasing each year in line with inflation). Different schemes calculate transfer values in different ways. A given individual may therefore receive a transfer value from their scheme that is significantly different from that quoted by the Xafinity Transfer Value Index.
